B-2 Tourism & Visitor Visa

Many people want to visit the U.S., whether because they have family in the country or they just want to see the sights. The B2 Visa allows them to see relatives and all the attractions that make the U.S. famous.

Applying for a B2 Visa involves multiple steps. An applicant begins the process by filling out the required form online and uploading a photo matching the application specifications.

Then, if the applicant is between 14 and 79 years of age, or the consular officer deems it necessary, the applicant must schedule an interview, generally with a U.S. Embassy or Consulate in their country of residence. The applicant will also be required to pay fees associated with the application, and several supporting documents need to be brought to the interview. The application will be reviewed and either accepted or denied.

Who is eligible for the B-2 Visa?

Eligible reasons for visiting the U.S. under a B2 Visa:

- Tourism
- Vacation (holiday)
- Visit with friends or relatives
- Medical treatment
- Participation in social events hosted by fraternal, social, or service organizations
- Participation by amateurs in musical, sports, or similar events or contests, if not being paid for participating
- Enrollment in a short recreational course of study, not for credit toward a degree (for example, a two-day cooking class while on vacation)

Is there anything else required for a B-2 Visa application?

This B2 visa is not for applicants who wish to visit the U.S. for business purposes. The U.S. Department of State adds that applicants for visitor visas must be able to prove that they are not coming to the U.S. in order to immigrate, but rather to enter the country temporarily for a purpose applicable to the particular visa they are applying for.

In order to show that they are eligible for a B2 visa, they must show that they are entering the country temporarily for a specific time period, have funds to cover expenses, and have a residence and other “binding ties” outside the U.S. that ensures that they depart from the country when they are supposed to.
